A New Perspective

Becoming My Mother. This is a concept I’ve been pondering for awhile.

So many women dread becoming their mother. They remember the moments of irritation. The yelling. The rock-biscuits at breakfast. I’m not saying my mom didn’t do those things. In fact, she did them all. The rock-biscuits are still a joke around my parents’ kitchen table. The difference between my mom and all those other moms, is what happened in between.

Sometime between curling hair; cooking breakfast, lunch and dinner; attending PTA meetings, choir concerts, and art shows, she did something else. She taught me what it was like to nurture. She showed me that it was ok to let down your guard and let the world see who you really are. At some point between the family dinners and shopping trips, she stopped being just my mom and became my friend.

I know that she isn’t a perfect woman, but she was the perfect woman to raise me. So for this reason, becoming my mother is not something I dread. It’s something I’m trying to embrace.  So this is the new perspective for my blog. Becoming my mother, recognizing the good, the bad, and hopefully saying something that means some one else out there too!

So here’s to becoming my mother, one day, one recipe, one project at a time. So that some day, I can be the kind of wonderful mother to my children that she was to me.
